If you have a magical problem, and no one else can help, you need to get Strange. When it comes to magic in our universe, there is no higher being than the Sorcerer Supreme. He is judge, jury, and sometimes executioner of all manner of magical threats. He keeps all sorts dangerous magical artifacts under safekeeping to keep them away from the wrong hands. He ensures every day that we're not invaded by demonic warlords from other dimensions. As another famous doctor once said, "If you don't like it, if you want to take it to a higher authority, there isn't one. It ends with me." If you're a vicious vampire, or a tempestuous troll, or any other supernatural being, there's always one word that you know: Strange.
For those who don't know who Doctor Strange is, this is it: Redemption. At the core of it, Doctor Strange is a story of redemption.
He lost everything in his life because he lost his ability to perform surgery and he was too proud to accept a lesser position. He wanted the fame, the fortune, the glory, and it cost him everything short of his sanity (and some of that, maybe). It was a last-ditch trip to Tibet that he met the Ancient One, who saw that he ultimately had a strong, pure soul, but that it had been dirtied by years of addiction, lust, gluttony, and every sin under the sun.
Ultimately Stephen wanted to help people, that's why he became a surgeon, and the Ancient One offered him a different path to help others. He couldn't save his hands, but he could save his soul.
Strange doesn't like stupid people, but he's still going to save them, and it stems from when he was a kid when his sister drowned in front of his eyes and he couldn't do anything to help her.
So in a way, him sacrificing his social life, his love life, all of his life in order to become Sorcerer Supreme, it's to save both his sister from drowning way back in the day, and to save himself from the jerk addict he once was.
He doesn't think he's worthy of having a life because he lived so excessively when he was a surgeon, with the drugs, booze, all of that.
That's why I like Strange. I don't care that he can blow up universes. I care that he's a guy who was an asshole, who pushed away everybody in his life, who wouldn't save people if they couldn't pay him, and who didn't even go to his own father's funeral.
I equate him to a monk version of Tony Stark. He did a lot of bad things, and now he's sacrificing his own wants and needs and saving everybody he can to make up for it.
friends ,
Strange often brings together heroes to fight greater-than-normal threats, which is how The Defenders formed. He was also part of the New Avengers. The ironic part is he usually does this against his will: Stephen prefers to work alone in his quest against supernatural evil. But he's relatively easy going, except for when he's irritated or upset, at which point his old arrogance can rear its ugly head and he can become quite the jackass. Stephen does have a soft spot for kids, due to the loss of his younger sister at a young age.
enemies ,
LOTS. strange is literally the last line of defense earth has from the supernatural, so anybody who threatens mankind or earth is in his wheelhouse. his laundry list of enemies include demons, vampires, werewolves, interdimensional warlords, Old Gods, gods in general, halflings, dragons, ghouls, and goblins.
lovers ,
This...is touchy. Stephen used to be a hardcore womanizer, even rivaling Tony Stark in terms of the amount of women they competed for, but this changed after he became Sorcerer Supreme. His entire life is dedicated to protecting mankind from the supernatural, so it's hard for him to find somebody. Still, his womanizing ways do still rear their ugly heads when he's feeling lonely, in particular when he's struggling with a craving for his various addictions. If only he could find a woman that could make him feel human...
